Living and Working in Manchester

Manchester is a metropolitan borough with a large population in the North West of England. Once recognised for our extensive textile and cotton mile trade, our vibrant city remains as one of the fastest growing cities in Europe. Manchester is one of the region’s most innovative, original and exciting places to live and work. From the beauty of the surrounding countryside to the heart of the vibrant inner city with a range of shopping, entertainment and dining options.

With around 100,000 students our excellent education and world class universities attract highly skilled and talented individuals from around the world adding to the diversity of our great city. Our world-famous music scene and rich history attract many, with people travelling from all over to experience our festivals and celebrations.

Home to both Manchester United and Manchester City football clubs and their equally famous stadiums, Manchester is the centre of an iconic football legacy. It’s not just football you can experience in Manchester though, experience a day watching cricket at the Lancashire Cricket Club or watch our Rugby Union teams in action.

Manchester’s wider transport links make it well-connected to the world. We have easy access to rail, air and road travel including a fast rail service to London and flights from one of the best UK airports.

You can make the most of Manchester’s location and transport links by getting out of the city and into the countryside. Within a short distance you can find the Peak District which is famous for some of the best outdoor rock climbing in the country, as-well as walking, cycling and even caving. The Pennines are also close by, being known by many for it’s rolling hills and breath-taking views. It’s not just countryside you have easy access to – if you prefer some retail therapy, our famous shopping centres will not disappoint. Or other northern cities such as Liverpool, Leeds and Sheffield are within an hour of Manchester.

Wherever you go you will experience a great northern welcome with people famed for their warmth, humour and generosity.
