Working as a Consultant in Adult Forensic Services
At Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH), our Consultants in Forensic Psychiatry play a crucial role in shaping specialist care for people with complex mental health needs who require secure or community-based forensic support. If you're interested in working at the intersection of Psychiatry, risk management, and recovery-focused care, you'll find a highly engaged, supportive and evolving environment at GMMH.
A Unique and Specialist Role
As a Consultant in our Adult Forensic Services, you will work across low and medium secure settings or community Forensic teams. These services support individuals across Greater Manchester, with GMMH acting as the lead provider for the Adult Secure Provider Collaborative. Our Consultants are central to service design, clinical decision-making and improvement efforts – especially now as we develop a new, patient-centred model of care.
The work is stimulating and varied, offering a blend of inpatient care, court and tribunal work, collaborative risk management, and leadership in multidisciplinary teams. You will be supported by junior doctors, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, nurses and a dedicated physical health team.
Flexibility and Work-Life Balance
We know that flexibility matters. GMMH offers options for part-time or adjusted job plans to suit your needs. On-call commitments are non-residential and manageable, currently running at a 1-in-13 rota. You’ll also benefit from a job plan that includes dedicated Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) time, and opportunities to engage in non-clinical work that matches your interests.
Research, Teaching and Leadership
As a GMMH Consultant, you’ll have opportunities to contribute to clinical research and service development. GMMH is an active member of the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, with strong ties to local universities including Manchester, Salford, and Central Lancashire. Whether you're supervising students, delivering postgraduate training, or conducting forensic service evaluations, you'll be encouraged to pursue your academic interests.
We offer structured support for leadership development, and many Consultants take on management responsibilities or participate in transformation programmes. You’ll be part of a committed Consultant body that meets weekly and plays a key role in strategic planning and continuous improvement.
Support and Wellbeing
The wellbeing of our Consultants is a priority. From your first day, you’ll be supported by clinical leadership, line management supervision, and a medical education team that values your professional development. GMMH offers an extensive wellbeing offer, including access to counselling, mindfulness, peer support, debriefs, physiotherapy, and occupational health.
New Consultants are welcomed into our New Consultant Development Programme, and everyone has access to our CPD sessions, a dedicated appraisal and revalidation team, and opportunities to become appraisers or mentors.
