Substance Misuse in the Workplace

The aim of of the one day course is for participants to increase their knowledge of managing substance use and substance misuse in the workplace, including: basic drug and alcohol awareness (signs of drug mis(use), effects and risks, intervention and treatment); the impact of substance mis(use) in the workplace; Drug Laws; Health and Safety at Work Act 1974; other related legislation including Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance and recommendations.

Extended courses are available and are aimed at the development of substance misuse at work policies and awareness raising for the workforce.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • outline a range of commonly misused substances and their relevance to workplace risks
  • summarise treatment and intervention responses available to staff who disclose substance misuse issues and where substance misuse issues are discovered
  • give examples of relevant legislation and guidance related to substance misuse in the workplace
  • identify key and recommended elements of a workplace substance misuse policy

Who is the course for? 

These training packages are intended to inform and assist workplace representatives to make sense of the complexities of substance use and misuse at work and to review and developing policies to deal with alcohol and drug problems in their workplace.
