Update - Bike Back Better with Cycle September

Cycle September is a fun global competition to help more people realise the benefits of riding a bike.

This year, over 25,000 participants helped to (re)introduce over 2,000 new riders to the benefits of cycling. Together we clocked up 3.8 million miles in almost 270,000 trip, saving over 65,000kg of carbon dioxide emissions.

Thank you to everyone at GMMH who took part!

We are delighted to announce that the joint GMMH winners are Timothy Alnuamaani (with the most miles) and Katie Sutton (with the most journeys). They have both been awarded with small sustainability gifts.

Here's what they had to say:

Tim

Timothy Alnumaani, Consultant, TW GMMH University Mental Health Team

"It was a pleasant surprise to find out I was a winner especially for my mileage ( a modest 7.5 miles per day round trip)!

I joined the Trust in January working with the new GM Universities Student Mental Health Service. It was much closer to home than my previous place of work. So I dusted off my bike, sold my car and got cycling! It's the perfect way to get some daily exercise, feel energised starting work and de-stress after a busy day.

If you're thinking of cycling- do it! Easy to find a second hand bike online or sign up to the cycle to work scheme. There are plenty of apps to help you plot your route (google maps easy enough). A great way to get fit, get leaner and feel good. You can also log your miles on lovetoride.net and win a prize!"

Katie

Katie Sutton, Staff Nurse, Park House

"I was pleasantly surprised to be told I had won one of the prizes!

I have been a cyclist as long as I can remember, but I started cycling to/from work in August after my shielding ended – I used to walk to work but I was redeployed from my usual job to the 24/7 Helpline, which is further away from home, so I bought myself a folding bike that I can store under a desk in the office, in order to avoid getting on the tram.

My advice to anyone thinking about starting cycling would be to just do it! It's very affordable (think second hand, or less well-known brands!) and start off doing short distances, and gradually build yourself up. It's great for fitness, and despite the need to be aware of what's going on around me, I get an almost meditative feeling out of the repetitive motion of my legs turning the pedals – it's great for my mental health too!!"

Congratulations Timothy and Katie!
