Study: The physical health of young people in mental health inpatient units

The study aims to explore the physical health of young people admitted to adolescent inpatient mental health units and to reflect on any differences over the following 6 months.

How will we do the study?

  • We aim to recruit 25 young people aged 14-18 years within 6 weeks of admission to an adolescent inpatient unit.
  • The young person will need to be able give informed consent.
  • Physical and mental health assessments will be completed by a researcher with the young person at three time points:
    • on admission
    • 3-month follow up
    • 6-month follow up

What are the benefits?

  • Young people will have a full comprehensive health check which will be tracked over time.
  • Clinical teams may be provided with rich, clinically meaningful data arising from the additional health checks.
  • We hope to improve the physical health of young people who are admitted to inpatient units and to prevent the onset of comorbid conditions in the future.

If you can help identify any young people who would be eligible for the study, please could you contact our research team:
