National Apprenticeship Week 2023 - #SkillsForLife

Monday 6 February is the start of National Apprenticeships Week. The week brings together people and organisations passionate about apprenticeships to celebrate the benefits and opportunities that apprenticeships bring.

This year’s theme is ‘Skills for Life’. It encourages everyone to consider how apprenticeships can help people gain the skills and knowledge needed to develop and grow in the careers of their choice.

We asked apprentices past and present at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust how they feel doing an apprenticeship has helped them. Here are their responses:

By doing my apprenticeship, it opened many options for me to choose one of which was to go into nursing as this was my goal at the time.

Upon completing my apprenticeship, I decided to change my career pathway and go into supporting staff in completing their Care certificate and a full induction so that they can give the best possible care to our service users.

Since being in the new role I have learnt that I like presenting and supporting people in the induction part into their pathway into GMMH and talking to them about what they will be expecting.

So now with my level 3 apprenticeship, I can go back to college and further my own pathway and look at starting a programme that will teach me how to carry out teaching sessions and presentations professionally.

What I found particularly helpful from doing my apprenticeships was being able to produce work to a higher standard and understanding my support worker role at the time.

I was also lucky to be able to do my English level 2 functional skills and I am currently doing my maths. I built on my confidence in the academic side, as well as practical, which has helped in my current role. – Sarah, Senior Health Support Worker Level 3

The apprenticeship course has helped me develop in my role and get a promotion and develop onto a secondment at higher level within the Trust.

The fostering of continued development and adapting to changes to service over time is something I found particularly useful. – Steven, Business Administrator Level 3

By doing an apprenticeship I have been able to develop the skills required to get two promotions since finishing my course 18 months ago.

I feel I am better equipped as a manager and nothing phases me anymore, doing an apprenticeship has helped develop my self-confidence. – Chris, ILM Level 3

Doing an apprenticeship enabled me to complete my Advanced Practice Masters degree to allow me to progress my career in clinical direction to become and Advanced Clinical Practitioner.

The apprenticeship allowed me to learn new skills that I could take back to my job role, to benefit patient care alongside my own development. – Katrina, Advanced Clinical Practitioner Level 7

Taking part in the apprenticeship helped me move up to a higher banding job, as it enabled me to demonstrate continued learning development and a willingness to improve my knowledge.

As a lot of the knowledge is Trust based, it gave me a better understanding of Trust policies and procedures. – Paul, Business Administrator Level 3
