GMW Shortlisted for Two HSJ Awards

HSJ finalist

Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMW), is today celebrating the announcement of being shortlisted for two Health Service Journal Awards.

The Recovery Academy and Apprenticeship Team have been shortlisted in the Workforce category for Developing a Career Pathway in Mental Health for People with Lived Experience. The aim of the Pathway is to create a workforce representative of the population it serves by providing a career Pathway for people with lived experience of mental health and/or substance misuse problems, from volunteering through to paid employment.

The roles developed for the Pathway are Volunteer Peer Mentor and Peer Support Apprentice. The former requires the completion of GMW’s Level 2 Award in Peer Mentorship. The Apprentice role is supported by GMW’s in-house Level 2 Health & Social Care Apprenticeship Team. By completing both qualifications, the individuals involved are better placed to apply for more senior roles within the mental health sector. One service user completed both qualifications and went on to complete his nurse training. He is now a registered mental health nurse within one of GMW Community Mental Health Teams (CMHT).

One of the service users on the Pathway said “The Peer Mentors just get where we’re at and seem a bit more understanding. They really do give us a sense of hope - if they can do it, then so can we”.

The Trust has also been shortlisted in the Provider Trust of the Year category. This category is about recognising those provider organisations that are providing excellent, patient-centred care built on strong engagement between clinicians and those organisations with a culture of continuous improvement.

To be shortlisted for this category the Trust has demonstrated excellent engagement between managers and clinicians with collaboration to drive service improvement. GMW showed it had created a culture which encourages openness and transparency to make staff feel valued and respected.

Another aspect of the criteria for this award was to show strong financial management which supports the organisation's strategic goals. This was evident by GMW recently being chosen as the preferred acquirier of Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust (MMHSCT).

Furthermore, earlier this year, GMW received a rating of “GOOD” following its latest inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The Trust was recognised to be effective, caring, responsive and well-led and this result places GMW in the top 30% of NHS trusts in the country.

Bev Humphrey, Chief Executive of GMW, said: “We are thrilled and proud to be shortlisted for not one but two HSJ Awards this year. The awards have grown to become the most sought after accolade in British healthcare, so GMW reaching the final stage for two awards is a fantastic achievement. A big thank you, and well done, to everyone who has been involved with the innovative work that has been recognised so far and good luck for the final awards process!

The HSJ awards take place on 23rd November 2016 at the InterContinental O2 Hotel, London.
