GMMH recognised by the National Guardian Office

National Guardian - Freedom to Speak Up

The National Guardian Office has recognised Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) as one of the top 10 most improved organisations for speaking up in 2023, according to the NHS Staff Survey.

We are proud to receive this recognition but understand that many areas still need to improve and we still have a lot of work to do to ensure that our staff feel safe to speak up and understand how they can impact change.

Since the NHS Staff Survey, we have:

  • Appointed an additional Freedom to Speak Up (FTSU) Guardian.

  • Developed our FTSU Board reports.

  • Devoted a Board development session to FTSU.

  • Expanded the intranet page with resources including posters and newsletters.

  • Expanded our FTSU Champion network to over 50.

  • Implemented FTSU e-learning for all staff.

These changes have resulted in the following improvements:

  • Many people speaking up via our FTSU Guardians.

  • People contacting us anonymously who may have otherwise not spoken up.

  • A decrease in the time taken to resolve concerns.

We have more developments planned for the upcoming months which include:

  • Updating the FTSU policy and integrating speaking up into other policies.

  • Developing a FTSU strategy.

  • Increasing visibility of our Guardians via site visits, listening events, internal training, Schwartz rounds, and coaching.

Most importantly, we will continue to listen and learn about ways to ensure that staff feel safe and confident to speak up via internal routes.  This can include directly to Management, via Unions, HR, or our Town Hall events.
