Free face-to-face mental health and wellbeing courses launch at the Recovery Academy!

Our Recovery Academy is back, with the launch of their latest courses and online resources for October 2021 to March 2022.

GMMH Recovery Academy was launched in 2013 and has become a highly regarded and well-established education and training facility. The overarching aim of GMMH’s Academy is to provide everyone – including people who are struggling with their mental health or addiction, their families and carers, and health professionals - with the learning opportunities they need to be able to manage and promote good mental health and wellbeing.

At the heart of the Academy, you will find core values that support an empowering, inclusive, and educational approach to recovery. This includes ensuring all resources are co-produced and co-delivered by professionals and people with lived experience. This means both professional expertise and lived experience are recognised with equal importance, and shared learning is promoted.

This term, you will find a range of brand-new courses including Opening Doors to Men, Understanding and Managing Grief, and Dementia – The Brain Perspective, alongside many tried and tested favourites focusing on Trauma, Personality Disorder, Addiction, Depression, Sleep and Dementia (among others).

Face-to-face courses are available at various locations across Manchester, Bolton, Salford, Trafford and Wigan.

All courses and resources focus on supporting people around recovery from mental health difficulties and addiction and can be useful if you are looking to increase your knowledge and understanding, improve your wellbeing or support someone else’s, or you simply want to learn something new.

The Academy is free to join and available to:

  • Anyone who is experiencing mental health or substance misuse problems.

  • Their supporters (family, friends and loved ones).

  • GMMH staff members, volunteers, and students on placement.

  • Any Health Care Professionals.

During the pandemic, to keep everyone as safe as possible during COVID-19 restrictions, face-to-face courses at the Recovery Academy were put on hold. However, in May 2021, following latest government guidance, thorough risk assessments, and the introduction of further safety measures, the Recovery Academy was delighted to open its doors to welcome students back to the classroom safely.

A Recovery Academy student, who recently attended the Living with a Personality Disorder course said:

“I am pleased that we have an opportunity to learn face-to-face in a classroom environment, which is a really beneficial experience. The session was very informative, and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole learning experience. The Co-Facilitator’s lived experience was very inspiring, and I learnt a lot from her positive and negative experiences.”

Claire Watson, Head of Service User/Carer Engagement & Improvement, and Recovery Academy Lead said:

“We’re so excited to be launching our newest Recovery Academy prospectus, which includes a fantastic range of courses that have been designed with and for those with lived experience on each topic, to meet the mental health and wellbeing needs of our communities.

“We know the pandemic has had a huge impact on people’s mental health, and we are here for anyone and everyone who is struggling, their family and carers. We would encourage anyone who is interested in kickstarting their mental health and wellbeing recovery journey to attend our new ‘Introduction to the Recovery Academy’ course, which focuses on what recovery means to you, and how the Academy can help.

“Over the past few months, it has been amazing to be able to bring our courses back to the classroom in person. We have done everything we can to ensure the highest levels of safety, including following latest government guidance, and only using large rooms where social distancing can be respected. We’re so pleased to say that this has been a huge success, and we can’t wait to welcome more of you to our Academy this term.”
