We were pleased to welcome a delegation from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) to the new North View in-patient hospital on the North Manchester General Hospital site.

The DHSC team, who were shown around the building by North View Project Director Marc Reed and team, were able to gain an insight into the operation of the £105.9m investment which is seen as a blueprint for modern mental health environments, NHS Net Zero and for effective delivery overall for projects of the future.

Marc said: “We were pleased to welcome the DHSC team to our new facility. It was an opportunity for us to show where share lessons learned and for the team to see first-hand the high standards set by the project and the intrinsic detail taken to provide a high quality, safe and therapeutic environment for our service users. We believe that this sets a new benchmark for future projects of this type and is already being recognised both nationally and internationally for its contributions.”

Victoria Cave, DHSC Deputy Director of Infrastructure Strategy and Capital Funding, said: “The new 150-bed inpatient mental health facility at North View stands out as a thoughtful and inspiring example of how capital investment can positively impact both service users and staff. It is great to see such a well-designed space that truly prioritises patient care while creating a supportive working environment for staff.

“North View’s modern, innovative design helps create a sense of belonging and support, with features that reflect the lived experiences of staff and service users. From private en-suite rooms to open, therapeutic spaces and clear sightlines, the facility has been carefully planned to promote safety, dignity, and recovery.

“Importantly, early outcomes already show the facility is already making a real difference -improving care delivery, reducing out-of-area placements, and supporting the overall wellbeing for service users and staff.

“Delivering this project on time and within budget is a testament to the dedication and collaboration of everyone involved. Their shared commitment has resulted in a facility that will make a meaningful difference to the community it serves for years to come.”

The award-winning building, which has been fully operational since November 24, was officially opened by Manchester’s former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton in March. It has already won two awards to date and has also been shortlisted for four others, two in the Design in Mental Health Awards and two run by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). In February it was also a finalist in the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce Building of the Year award.

The Health Estates and Facilities Management Association (HEFMA) has announced that the Capital, Estates and Facilities Directorate is among the finalists in three categories: 1. Team of the Year – the Capital, Estates and Facilities team; 2. Team of the Year – GMMH’s Catering Team. 3. Project of the Year – North View.
