April is Alcohol Awareness Month 2021!

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, a movement originating the US, aimed at drawing attention to the causes and effects of alcoholism and raising awareness of the help available to families and communities who are affected.

You Matter, We Are Here

In honour of Alcohol Awareness Month 2021, we are sharing quotes from service users at our Achieve and Unity addiction services in Cumbria and Greater Manchester.

Our main message is this: if you have been struggling with alcohol or drug problems during the pandemic, we are here to support you in Cumbria and Greater Manchester. Please don’t delay - find out about your local support service, and get in touch with us today, here: https://www.gmmh.nhs.uk/substance-misuse-services.

Resources for Alcohol Awareness

Alcohol Change has developed a range of useful resources to inform and advise about the impact of alcohol on health. You can download these resources below:

Fact sheets

Alcohol and mental health.pdf - the relationship between alcohol and mental health is complex.

Am I drinking too much.pdf - knowing how much is too much can be confusing when it comes to alcohol.

Drinking tips.pdf - it can be hard to know what to do to make sure your drinking is healthy. Here are some tips.

Alcohol and the brain.pdf - in this factsheet we'll look at all the various ways alcohol can affect the health of your brain, and what you can do to look after it.

Alcohol and your mood.pdf -  although we don't always think of it as such, alcohol is a psychoactive substance, meaning it can radically change the way we think and feel.

Alcohol units.pdf - what is a unit, and how many are in your drink?

Support with your drinking.pdf - if you are worried about your own or someone else's drinking, remember that there is always somewhere you can turn for support.

Someone else's drinking.pdf - when someone is drinking heavily it can cause problems also for those around them. But there are people you can turn to for help.

Chapman Barker Unit

During Alcohol Awareness month, our Chapman Barker Unit has received some fantastic feedback from a service user. We are so proud to have been able to make such a difference in this individual’s life!

CBU

CBU is a Consultant Psychiatrist-led detoxification inpatient unit that offers a truly unique, medically managed and recovery-focused treatment for men and women with drug and/or alcohol problems.

At CBU, we do not just see the addiction; we see the person, their family & carers & co-produce care plans so that our patients feel part of the recovery process from day one. Find more about CBU here:  https://www.gmmh.nhs.uk/chapman-barker-unit.

As a patient

As a service user, relative or carer using our services, sometimes you may need to turn to someone for help, advice, and support.
