Working in General Adult Psychiatry at GMMH

General Adult Psychiatry at Greater Manchester Mental Health is a dynamic, diverse and highly rewarding specialty, offering unparalleled opportunities for clinical impact, leadership and innovation. Sitting at the heart of our Trust’s mental health services, General Adult Psychiatry supports adults aged 18–65 across a wide range of inpatient, community and crisis settings, making it one of the broadest and most stimulating specialties within psychiatry.

Consultants work with a rich spectrum of presentations, including acute psychosis, severe mood disorders, trauma-related difficulties, comorbid substance use, personality disorder and long-term mental health conditions. It is a specialty where no two days are the same, and where expert clinical leadership can make a profound and immediate difference to individuals, families and communities across Greater Manchester.

A Broad and Varied Clinical Landscape

Consultants in General Adult Psychiatry work across a diverse range of services, including community mental health teams, acute inpatient wards, crisis resolution and home treatment teams, early intervention in psychosis services, liaison psychiatry within acute hospitals, and rehabilitation and recovery pathways. This breadth allows Consultants to tailor their roles, develop sub-specialist interests and build portfolio careers that reflect their skills and aspirations.

The work is firmly recovery-focused, offering opportunities to support people through the most acute phases of illness, develop long-term therapeutic relationships in the community, lead multidisciplinary interventions to reduce relapse and improve functioning, and promote physical health and wellbeing for people living with severe mental illness.

Opportunities for Consultants

General Adult Psychiatry plays a central role in the Community Mental Health Transformation Programme, offering genuine scope for consultants to shape how services evolve. Consultants are actively involved in developing new integrated community pathways, trauma-informed and person-centred models of care, crisis alternatives, and collaborative approaches with primary care, social services and the voluntary sector.

There are strong opportunities to take on clinical leadership roles, contribute to service development, lead quality improvement and governance initiatives, and influence strategy across the wider health and care system.

Education, Research and Portfolio Careers

GMMH has strong links with regional universities and training schemes, providing consultants with opportunities to teach medical students, foundation doctors and psychiatry trainees, act as educational supervisors and mentors, and contribute to core and higher training programmes. Consultants are supported to develop specialist teaching packages and innovative training approaches.

For those with academic interests, the Trust offers access to established research teams and NIHR partnerships, supporting research and innovation across areas such as psychosis, mood disorders, physical health in severe mental illness, digital mental health, neurodevelopmental interfaces, health inequalities and service redesign.

Consultants can also develop specialist or portfolio sessions in areas including liaison psychiatry, ECT, neuropsychiatry, addictions, crisis care, ADHD and autism services, personality disorder pathways, and perinatal collaboration.

Working Environment and Team Culture

Consultants join experienced and skilled multidisciplinary teams comprising nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, pharmacists, peer support workers and primary care mental health colleagues. Teams are collaborative, welcoming and committed to delivering high-quality, person-centred care.

GMMH offers a positive and supportive working environment, with manageable and clinically meaningful caseloads, flexible and less-than-full-time working options, and strong consultant peer networks. Staff wellbeing is prioritised through access to supervision, reflective practice, Schwartz rounds and wider wellbeing initiatives, supporting sustainable and satisfying consultant careers.

The Population We Serve

General Adult services support diverse communities across both urban and rural areas, working with people from a wide range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. Presentations are often complex and include psychosis, bipolar disorder, personality difficulties, trauma, substance misuse and chronic mental health conditions.

Consultants work closely with GPs and primary care networks, housing and homelessness services, drug and alcohol teams, criminal justice partners and voluntary sector organisations, ensuring a holistic, multi-agency approach to care.
