Living and working in Salford

The City of Salford has a proud history, steeped in industrial heritage whilst maintaining a focus on regeneration, progression and sustainability. The city features many notable landmarks and attractions including The Lowry Museum, The Imperial War Museum, RHS
Garden Bridgewater, MediaCityUK and waterfront destination Salford Quays. Over half of the city is made up of green spaces including forests, nature reserves, 30 miles of sculpture trail and parkland. A combination of urban, residential, waterfronts and green spaces make Salford a great choice for exploring, working and living.

There is an excellent transport network with motorways, rail and the Manchester International Airport linking it to many important cities and resorts. There is stunning countryside with the National Parks of the Peak District, Lake District and Snowdonia all within easy reach.

Salford is adjacent to Manchester – the commercial centre of the Northwest. Manchester is one of the most innovative, original and vibrant places to live and work, with an ethnically diverse population and culture, and a wealth of nationally acclaimed museums, art galleries and theatres. The city is also known internationally for its music and sporting reputation, and for its shops, restaurants, and lively nightlife.

Innovation in Salford

GMMH Salford’s innovative approach is underpinned by aspects of compassion focused therapy, trauma-informed care and least restrictive practice with multiple Quality Improvement and pathway development projects underway, to ensure these principles are
truly embedded within service user care. This is paralleled in the leadership approach, which is premised upon compassionate leadership. GMMH Salford has a strong focus on staff wellbeing, prioritising supervision, training and peer support through well-being groups for individuals with protected characteristics. The focus on principles of trauma-informed care and continuous innovation makes GMMH Salford an attractive and exciting service to work
with, rich with opportunity to contribute to service development.

Our well-established Managing Difficult Emotions (MDE) pathway is underpinned by Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), focussing on 6 skills for development; sensitivity to own needs, care for self-wellbeing, non-judgement, empathy and distress tolerance. These skills aim to counteract the feelings which often lead to maladaptive coping strategies such as self-harm, aggression and substance misuse. The skills are developed through structured one to one sessions and group sessions.

The PICU Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) pathway was developed to reduce restrictive practices and provide person centred care in cases where the target behaviour may be the service users only or best way of communicating an unmet need. Since implementation we have seen a reduction of restrictive practices including use of seclusion and positive feedback from both service users and staff.

There are exciting times ahead for our Psychology service, who are in the midst of an extensive expansion in staffing and service provision. Our psychology team provide direct work including formulation, one to one sessions and group work. They also support the MDT in care planning and providing training to the wider units.

The Salford Memory Assessment and Treatment Service (MATS), part of Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH), has been featured as an example of best practice in the Alzheimer’s Society Regional Variation Report 2021. The service runs an innovative assessment programme for people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), to increase the rate of an earlier diagnosis, and subsequent support and treatment.
