New Provider For Children’s Mental Health Services In Bolton

NHS Bolton CCG is delighted to announce that the contract to provide child and adolescent mental health services has been awarded to two new specialist providers.

Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) has been awarded the contract to deliver a children and young people’s mental health service for Bolton patients, in partnership with North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

The service, which replaces the current service delivered by Royal Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, will provide specific expertise in the field of children’s mental health and will work together with all services for children, young people and their families to ensure appropriate care is provided.

Wirin Bhatiani, Chair of NHS Bolton CCG, said: “This is a very positive step in delivering children’s mental health services in Bolton. We have brought in GMMH and North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust because they have the specialist knowledge, expertise and successful track-record in treating children and young people who suffer from mental health problems. We are looking forward to working together to provide the best service possible for Bolton.”

The new service will improve waiting times by focussing on Early Intervention and there will also be a greater emphasis on outreach-based support, particularly within schools.

This includes additional monies to increase the workforce to attract more skilled children’s mental health practitioners to work in Bolton.

GMMH has considerable experience in delivering mental health services for children and young people including inpatients and forensic outreach.

Bev Humphrey, Chief Executive of GMMH, said, “We are delighted to have the opportunity to shape mental health services for children and young people in Bolton.  Having delivered mental health care to young people in a variety of settings, we have a wealth of experience to bring to Bolton, as well as a strong partnership with North West Boroughs Healthcare.

“It will be our aim to put in place the best mental health services we can – by helping children and young people as soon as they need support means we give them the best start in life.  We also see it as vital that we support the whole family and those who care for children or young people living with a mental health issue.

“It is our intention to work closely with parents, carers and young people to ensure we are delivering the care they need, in the right place, at the right time.  They are the experts when it comes to accessing mental health support and we recognise how important it is to listen to their views and act on their feedback to provide the best care we can.”

North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust also has extensive experience of delivering mental health services to young people and their families.

Simon Barber, Chief Executive at North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are proud to have been given the opportunity to deliver mental health services for children and young people in Bolton in partnership with Greater Manchester Mental Health.

“These services will sit alongside the children and young people’s eating disorder service we already deliver in Bolton and we look forward to building on our knowledge and experience of delivering similar child and adolescent mental health services across Wigan, Warrington, St Helens, Knowsley and Halton to benefit children and families in Bolton.

“The priority now is to work closely with Greater Manchester Mental Health and the current service provider to ensure a smooth transition for all those who access these services and for the staff who provide the care.”

The service aims to deliver a ‘no wrong door approach’ which is a move away from criteria-based access, to a focus on ensuring all children and young people are receiving the most appropriate care to meet their needs.

This will be delivered through seamless transitions across a variety of multi-agency services that support the emotional health and wellbeing of children and young people including Education, Primary Care, Community and Adult Mental Health Services.

An extensive amount of consultation and engagement took place with children and young people, health care professionals, community and voluntary sector groups and other key partners in order to inform the new children and young people’s mental health service.
