Gardener Unit Launches Monthly Community Meals Celebrating Culture and Connection

The Gardener Unit has recently launched a new monthly community meeting aimed at bringing staff and young people together through shared cooking and cultural celebration. Each month, the unit prepares a meal linked to a different cultural event, offering a meaningful opportunity for everyone to learn, collaborate, and experience something new.

Communal dining plays an important role within therapeutic environments. Sharing a meal encourages conversation, helps build trust, and strengthens the sense of connection between young people and the staff supporting them. For adolescents in a medium secure setting, these moments can reduce feelings of isolation and promote confidence in social interactions.

The most recent gathering took place on Friday 13th February, when the unit came together to celebrate Chinese New Year. Young people and staff worked side by side to plan and cook a themed meal, exploring traditions associated with the festival and enjoying the sense of achievement that comes from creating something as a community. In keeping with the theme, they also completed a fun quiz, discovered each others' Chinese zodiac signs and explored the personality characteristics traditionally associated with each one.

This initiative also reflects this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week theme of belonging. By creating regular opportunities to gather around food, celebrate cultural diversity, and contribute to a shared experience, the Gardener Unit is actively nurturing a community where young people feel valued and included. These monthly meals are already becoming a highlight in the unit’s calendar!
