We are proud to be one of the first Trusts implementing the Patient and Carer Race Equality Framework (PCREF) – NHS England’s first anti-racism framework in mental health care. PCREF is all about making mental services fairer, more inclusive and safer for everyone, especially those from racialised communities.
Sean Rigg and Olaseni Lewis directly contributed to the creation and piloting of the PCREF. These cases exposed severe, disproportionate racial inequities and lethal power dynamics within UK mental health services, directly leading to the development of this mandatory anti-racism framework.
Seni died due to prolonged restraint by police officers on three September 2010, while he was a voluntary patient at a psychiatric hospital. He was 23 years old.

Sean Rigg, aged 40, died at Brixton police station on 21 August 2008. During a medical emergency in a mental health crisis an inquest in 2012 found that Sean died of a cardiac arrest following restraint in the prone position, which was deemed ‘unnecessary’ and ‘unsuitable’.
