Sports Hall Opening

Manchester Giants player James Jones

British professional basketball team, Manchester Giants are coming to the Edenfield Centre at Greater Manchester West Mental Health Foundation Trust (GMW) to celebrate the official launch of the new £1Million sports hall for patients.

Manchester Giants star James Jones along with some team mates will be holding basketball training sessions for the patients at the Edenfield Centre. The Basketball Championship Winner will be training the patients in general basketball skills including passing, dribbling and shooting.

The male and female patients contributed to the building from the beginning by suggesting a request for an indoor facility for team sports and also suggesting what activities should be made available. The new sports facility has a court suitable for badminton, basketball and 5-a-side football games as well as housing a variety of sports equipment and a music system for activities like Zumba and aerobics classes as well as space for patients to take part in a variety of leisure and social activities.

Research shows taking part in regular physical activity is good for mental health and that exercise can boost self-esteem, help with concentration, sleep and make people look and feel better.

Shirley Wheeler, Deputy Head of Operations at the Edenfield Centre Said:

‘GMW want to ensure our patients have every opportunity to take part in regular physical activity and we believe that meeting the physical healthcare needs of all our patients is one of our key priorities.

‘Research has shown us that attractive, well-designed environments can offer significant therapeutic benefits to patients and enhance well-being and this idea was always at the forefront when designing our new sports hall.’

The Edenfield Centre already has a gym and outdoor spaces for patients to take part in physical activities and the new sports hall will add to these facilities by providing a large internal space for patients to take part in group and team sports activities, whatever the weather.

The building work for the new sports hall began in November 2012 and the launch event will take place on Friday 5th July 2013.
