Following nearly three years as Chair of Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, Professor Tony Warne has announced that he will step down when his term of office comes to an end.

Tony joined GMMH in January 2024, bringing more than 40 years’ experience in mental health services through clinical and management roles as well as academic work in the North West. During his time as Chair, he has helped lead the Trust through an important period of improvement and out of recovery.

Tony has been a visible and approachable Chair, regularly visiting services across Greater Manchester and taking time to listen to colleagues, service users, carers and families. He has consistently recognised that meaningful change depends on listening carefully to the people who use our services and those who support them.

Tony said:

“It has been an absolute privilege to serve as Chair of GMMH. I am grateful to everyone who has played a part in the Trust’s progress and I have seen how much colleagues want to make a positive difference for service users, carers and families.

“Throughout my time at GMMH, I have had the opportunity to meet many dedicated colleagues and partners as well as service users, carers and family members. What they have shared has been an important reminder that improvement must be grounded in people’s real experiences of care.

“There is still important work ahead, but by continuing to listen and learn, GMMH can provide better care and support for the people and communities it serves. I wish Chris, the new executive team and everyone at GMMH every success for the future.”

Chief Executive, Chris Oliver said:

“On behalf of everyone at GMMH, I would like to thank Tony for his leadership and the care he has shown for colleagues, service users, carers and families. His experience and steady support have made an important contribution during a significant period of change for the Trust.

“Tony leaves with our sincere thanks and very best wishes for the future.”

Tony will remain in post until the end of his term of office. Further information about the appointment of his successor will be shared in due course.
