Mental Health Trust launches new Nursing Strategy

Tim McDougall and Gill Green Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMW) has launched its new Nursing Strategy at an event for all registered nurses and nursing assistants, today (Friday 9th April).

Trust nursing staff joined Gill Green, Director of Nursing and Operations, and Tim McDougall, Deputy Director of Nursing, in launching the Strategy, sharing good practice and talking about a range of topics pertinent to nursing in a mental health setting.

The new five year vision and strategy, aims to continue to build a culture of compassionate care for nursing, ensuring services remain safe, responsive and of a high quality to guarantee people with mental health and/or alcohol and drug problems receive the best possible care.

The strategy and vision for nursing was developed in collaboration with professional leads for nursing within each service at the Trust, following a series of facilitated consultation workshops with nurses.

The consultation process involved all levels of nursing across the wide range of specialities The Trust provides.

The nursing vision within the strategy is:

  • To deliver safe, responsive, high quality compassionate care in a recovery focused environment by a highly skilled, accountable, and effective nursing workforce.
  • Nurses will be at the forefront of driving improvements and working in collaboration with service users, and others across a range of services to enable a positive experience throughout their recovery journey.
  • Service user and carer feedback will shape, influence and be at the heart of our nursing practise.

Gill Green, Director of Nursing and Operations for the Trust, said: “This document is the culmination of the hard work, commitment and dedication of all nurses at GMW.

“While the NHS continues to go through challenges, I believe there has never been a more exciting or rewarding time to be a nurse in a leading mental health trust like ours. It is our job to empower and support our nurses in being able to deliver the best care possible, in welcoming and calming environments to inspire our service users that there is hope and a pathway to recovery. I fully believe this Strategy will make this possible.”

Every registered nurse in the Trust will receive a personal copy of the new Nursing Strategy. The 22-page strategy will run from 2016 - 2021.
