MaST project shortlisted for Positive Practice in Mental Health Award
The Greater Manchester Mental Health MaST (Management and Supervision Tool) project has been shortlisted for two Positive Practice in Mental Health Awards: ‘Innovation in Digital Mental Health’ and ‘Quality Improvement and/or Service Transformation’. The shortlist was announced earlier this week and this year’s ceremony will take place in Durham on 6th October 2022.
The annual nation-wide awards by the Positive Practice Mental Health Collaborative highlight and celebrate best practice in mental health care across the country.
MaST is a software platform which analyses health data from the Trust's existing clinical records in Paris, to support decision-making in Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) to provide effective mental health care.
The MaST project is unique in its use of Risk of Crisis and Complexity algorithms to overcome this challenge, one of the only predictive algorithms designed specifically for mental health services, the system finds important information which may be buried deep in the clinical record.
After MaST implementation, staff described feeling more in control of their caseloads, having more time:
“Makes me feel I get things done quicker, I feel it’s made my job a hell of lot easier.”
They also described being able to be more proactive:
“Quicker way to see where my clients were up to rather than waiting to be told when things are out of date.”
The tool was first rolled out as a pilot programme in the Trust at Trafford and Bolton CMHTs in 2020. Early evaluation from staff found the system to be helpful, easier and quicker. Since then, MaST has been rolled out to all Trust CMHTs. After 1 year of use, a survey of CMHT staff found:
- 85% (from 47%) of respondents reported that information systems helped them manage their caseloads
- 69% (from 35%) of respondents reported that information systems helped them identify those at risk of using crisis services in the future
- 84% (from 40%) of respondents reported that information systems helped them track completion of KPIs
