FAQs
What is improv?
Improv (short for improvisation) is a form of theatre or comedy that involves making things up as you go along. The style of improvisation covered in our Jam sessions will involve short activities that people can take part in on a voluntary basis. These activities will look at using listening and observation, working together and exploring our imagination.
It is not about trying to be funny or preparing jokes or puns. The laughs in improv come from discovering new (and often absurd) things and playing together, rather than having anything witty prepared in advance.
Do I have to take part in every activity?
Not at all. Everyone will have the opportunity to participate as much or as little as they feel comfortable with.
Do I have to have performing or acting experience?
No. If you have tried similar activities before, that may be helpful, but there is no requirement for previous experience to join the Jam.
How can this benefit my mental wellbeing?
The benefits of improv will be different for everyone who takes part, but learning some improv activities and games can help you to:
- focus more on the present rather than worry about the past or future
- build human connection
- build resilience
- foster a positive mindset
Above all else, it’s an hour and a half away from day-do-day life, giving you the chance to prioritise play!
