Carers Week 2022

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.

This year, the week will run from 6 - 12 June 2022, with the aim of coming together to make caring Visible, Valued and Supported.

Carers Week is a national campaign to raise awareness of the role carers play across in supporting somebody, the contribution they make to society and the challenges that they might face along the way. It also helps people in a caring role to understand that their role has a name.

If carers do not see that their role has a name, they are very unlikely to access support in their own right (such as a statutory carers assessment) or consider the impact their caring role is having on their own physical and mental health. This is particularly important at this time. In a recent survey of nearly 6,000 carers, it has been highlighted that:

  • Four in five unpaid carers are providing more care for relatives.
  • 71% reported that the needs of the person they care for have increased during the pandemic.
  • Two thirds (67%) worried about how they will cope through further lockdowns or local restrictions.

Carers need to know their rights and what support is available to them wherever they are in their caring journey: whether they are in the workplace, supporting the service user during an admission on an inpatient facility or in the community, when interacting with professionals or at home. This Carers Week let’s empower carers with information and support, so they can feel confident asking for what they need.

We'll be sharing messages tied to the daily themes on our social media, as well as having Neil Grace, Lead for Service User and Carer Engagement, and Laura Fleury, STR Worker and Carer Champion, takeover our Twitter during the week.
