CBT for the Menopause within Salford Talking Therapies

Are you struggling with concentration, poor sleep, digestive issues or increased anxiety or low mood? Are you in your 40’s and female? Could you be in the perimenopause?

Many women don’t notice when their perimenopausal journey begins but can experience symptoms for several years without knowing what is happening. The perimenopause is the time leading up to the time before your periods stop, this can last for up to 10 years. For some women, the ending of their periods may be at 51 for other ethnicities this can be as early at 47 years. The fluctuation in hormones during this time can create some difficulties we may have not experienced before, or make symptoms like anxiety or low mood worse.

We have compiled some answers to myths people have asked us when discussing menopause:

Common myths about the menopause

“Menopause is just hot flushes or night sweats isn’t it?”

There are currently over 30 recognised symptoms of menopause, including  the symptoms mentioned above. Lesser known symptoms also include digestive issues,  changes with skin and hair and joint pain.

“Menopause is something I should just get on with”

The menopause transition is different for each person. Some sail through, others struggle. Although it is a natural transition, it is not something which should be suffered without help.

“I’m struggling with my menopause transition but I’m the only one who is.”

A survey of other 4,000 women in the UK found that 77% described one or more of their symptoms as ‘very difficult’.

“There is something wrong with me if I feel this way”

There is no ‘correct way’ to experience menopause. If you’re struggling, it’s important and talk to someone.

“If I access Talking Therapies it means it’s all in my head. It feels real.”

NICE guidance (2024) recognises that women find this transition difficult and recommends talking therapy to help navigate this journey, as well as pharmacological treatments if these can be safely prescribed.

Okay, what should I do?

Salford Talking therapies has a CBT for the menopause group, which is a six week course aimed at having a better understanding of symptoms and using CBT techniques to help navigate this transition. The group is for those struggling during any part of their menopause journey.
