Skin Camouflage Team
Our Skin Camouflage Service provides medical camouflage creams for people with self-harm scars and other conditions that cause skin marking or discolouration to help improve confidence and mental wellbeing.
Who is our service for?
Our service is available for adults and young people using our mental health services in Wigan.
How to access our service
You will need to be under the care of one of our adults' or child and adolescent mental health services to access the skin camouflage service.
If you would like to try out skin camouflage creams, speak to your care coordinator or a member of staff. They will be able to make a referral for you to our service and they will come with you to your first appointment with the skin camouflage team.
If you are not currently using one of our mental health services and want to try medical camouflage creams, please make an appointment to see your GP.
What will happen at your first appointment?
At your first appointment, your skin camouflage practitioner will tell you about the medical camouflage creams and how they work. They will then talk you through the colour matching process and try out different colours with you until you find one you are happy with. They will then apply the cream to a larger area and set the cream with a special powder to make it waterproof.
Your skin camouflage practitioner will talk you through the cream application process every step of the way and you will be able to watch them apply the cream in a mirror. You will then have the chance to apply the creams yourself to make sure you feel comfortable with using them.
Your practitioner will then provide you with a prescription for a set of the creams and setting powder to last you several months so you can begin using them at home.
Before you leave, you will be given an information pack which you can use to help you apply the creams and you will be given a phone number to call if you have any queries about using the creams.
