Consultant Psychiatrist opportunities in Old Age Psychiatry

Guardian Banner

GMMH has an enthusiastic and dynamic body of consultant and specialty grade doctors working in Old Age Psychiatry in a variety of settings including Memory Assessment Services, Older Adult Community Mental health Teams, Inpatient services for older adults with mental illnesses and services providing liaison into acute hospitals, intermediate care and care homes.

Older Adult services follow the Royal College of Psychiatrists guidance of having age appropriate services for Older Adults and the Trust is committed to continue this.

Old Age Psychiatrists work closely and collaboratively with their nursing, social work, psychology, OT, physiotherapy and management team colleagues and with colleagues in primary and secondary care.

There is a long history of doctors working within GMMH training the Old Age Psychiatrists of the future in the region both as Core and Higher Trainees. We value our trainees and have good feedback on training via the GMC surveys.

There are ample opportunities for doctors to become involved in research projects coordinated by the Trust’s research units.

Old Age Psychiatrists are involved in quality improvement, management and leadership, education and training and joint working with other agencies. Having consultants as a key part of a collaborative leadership team is a key principle of service development and delivery within the Trust.

Currently Old Age Psychiatrists take part in many of the Trust’s service development and governance work-streams including the audit committee, clinical and social governance, physical healthcare work-streams, medicine management groups, the Older Adult Steering Group and the ECT committee (two of the Trust’s three ECT services have Old Age Psychiatrists as ECT leads).

Our doctors and senior non-medical staff are involved in work which impacts across Greater Manchester including the work of Dementia United, a Greater Manchester wide initiative to improve the lives of people with dementia.

Older adult services are largely locality (division) based but the bed base is shared across the Trust. Whilst the models of care are slightly different in all localities, we provide multidisciplinary community mental health teams, memory assessment teams and inpatient care for all older adults with mental illnesses within the Trust footprint.
