Recovery Academy Autumn Winter 2017 Prospectus launched

Free courses on mindfulness, art, photography, lived experience of mental health problems and substance misuse are available free as part of Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust’s (GMMH) Recovery Academy.

The 2017 Autumn/Winter prospectus has been launched today, 2 October, and current or former users of GMMH’s services, their families, friends, carers as well as health care professionals can sign up now.

The new prospectus contains 56 courses to help improve your emotional wellbeing, support recovery from substance misuse, understand mental health or substance misuse problems and tackle stigma.

New courses in the Academy’s ninth prospectus include: Art for Good Health, Military Veterans Awareness and Overcoming Sleep Problems.

Courses vary in length from one-off workshops to those that take place weekly for a number of weeks.

Our courses are held in a variety of venues, from community centres and hospitals to learning centres and theatres in locations across Bolton, Salford, Trafford, Prestwich, Altrincham and Manchester.

All the courses are co-written and co-delivered by professionals and people with mental health and/or substance misuse problems, which mean the courses, are enriched by professional expertise and lived experience.

Claire Watson, GMMH’s Recovery Academy Lead, said: “The Recovery Academy’s popularity continues to grow.

“All our courses offer a range of learning opportunities to create an open, supportive culture around mental health and alcohol and drug problems.

“Attending a Recovery Academy course is a great way of helping our service users and their families as well as our staff to acquire the skills and knowledge they need to maintain good mental health and support anyone who is experiencing a mental health or alcohol and drug problem.”

The Academy work with partners like Mind, The Reader, Wildlife Trusts, Nordoff Robbins and Moston active Drama Theatre Company to continually develop the provision of courses for people with lived experience of mental health difficulties, their families and carers as well as mental health professionals.

The Recovery Academy’s Spring/Summer term prospectus is available to download from www.gmmh.nhs.uk/recovery.
