Manchester community groups to benefit from £1.5m fund

Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) is providing an exciting opportunity for community groups and projects across Manchester to benefit from a £1.5m fund to help promote wellbeing and improve mental health.

The Manchester Wellbeing Fund (MWF) is a three-year programme designed to build community support, involving service users and carers across the city, to help people living with mental health conditions through innovative projects.

The money is from GMMH’s existing funding for the city of Manchester and is divided into 12 neighbourhood budgets which community groups and projects can register an interest for via the Trust website at: www.gmmh.nhs.uk/manchester-wellbeing-fund.

The main objectives of the fund are to:

  • Support people living with mental illness
  • Promote wellbeing and prevent mental ill health
  • Challenge the stigma associated with mental illness

To help support this process, service users, carers, community representatives and staff from the Trust will meet to review and develop proposals. It is hoped the extensive knowledge of these different representatives, from the lived experience of service users and carers, the local knowledge of community residents, to the working knowledge of staff, well help develop exciting and innovative projects.

Examples of projects set to benefit from the fund include a community drama group, based in Levenshulme. The group, made up of service users in central Manchester, aims to use drama to help address people’s mental health needs and they have bid for funding to assist with setting up and delivering classes.

Deborah Partington, GMMH Director of Operations, said: “The Trust is really excited to be able to give people the chance to get involved in projects that will make a genuine difference to the wellbeing and mental health of Manchester residents.

“We can help new groups to become established, or support existing ones, and we encourage proposals that might involve a particular community of interest, not only those confined to just one neighbourhood. Whether you are an established organisation or a group of residents with a project you would like to develop, please get in touch with us.

“When GMMH became responsible for mental health services in Manchester in January 2017, we made a commitment to improve the mental wellbeing of people across the city. This fund can help make a positive difference.”
