A big thank you to all Unity Volunteers

Annual volunteering hours have doubled since 2017!

We would like to give a massive heartfelt applause to all our Unity Recovery Drug and Alcohol Service Volunteers who in 2019 notched up 3,326 hours of Volunteering between them, in support of our services in Cumbria and the people we help. Their contribution and their commitment mean that we can go the extra mile!

A big thank you as well to Sue Bright, the Unity Recovery Occupational Therapist and Brian Morin our Volunteer Co-ordinator who guide and support our volunteers to use their strengths and experience where they are most needed.

Total hours increased

At Unity we encourage people who have been supported by the service to become Volunteers within our team. We are also happy to have Volunteers from our local communities who do not have lived experience of drugs and alcohol issues, and they too benefit from our training package. Following Induction and Mandatory training, each Volunteer will complete Practical Recovery training and Level 2 accredited Peer Mentor training. Our Volunteers get involved in various support roles within the service relevant to their wishes and strengths and local service need. This involvement can include co-facilitating groups, meet and greet in reception areas, 1:1 Recovery Plan or assessment work, supporting events and a variety of other activities. All our volunteers participate in group supervision and have line management support.

Added to this, many of our Volunteers have built their confidence and skills to a level that has enabled them to move on to paid employment, further education and other meaningful occupations.

Unity Recovery Drug and Alcohol Service, based in Cumbria, is part of Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, who have been rated as 'Outstanding' by the Care Quality Commission for substance misuse services.
